Today is Giving Tuesday and Brant Food For Thought  officially kicks off The Gift of Good Nutrition winter giving campaign.  We are continually amazed by the ongoing generosity of the communities of Brantford and Brant.

The demand for school-based student nutrition programs is growing and the need for our services is greater than ever.

The City of Brantford and the County of Brant are part of Ontario’s growth plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe Area.  Our areas are experiencing unprecedented population growth due to the provincial mandate.  In fact, our growth rate over the last 5 years has been higher than the provincial average.  Consequently, our schools are grappling with higher enrolment numbers and capacity issues.  With increased school growth comes increased demand for nutrition programs and student support.

One principal at a school located in a rapidly expanding area of the city recently reached out to us with this comment:

“We have quite a few families who are new to Canada and settling here now.  Many of these parents are struggling on minimum wage, facing food insecurity, working 2 jobs, etc.  A significant number of students at this school could use a healthy snack or meal.  We would like to apply for a Brant Food For Thought food grant to start up a student nutrition program.”

Teachers witness firsthand the benefits of a student nutrition program in their school community.

“I have one particular student in my class who does not get a solid breakfast every day at home. When I work with him one on one, I can tell when he hasn’t eaten because he can’t focus. When this happens, I take him down to the snack room where he grabs himself a couple snacks. After eating, we try to focus again and he does a MUCH better job.   I know this is the case for quite a few of our students in the school and feel that they are strongly benefitting from this program.”
